What Does the Madison Count Board Do?
Madison County can, in some ways, be a microcosm of the country as a whole. People from all walks of life reside and work here, and it is important that the voices of all our citizens be heard. Therefore, Madison County is broken down into 29 Districts, each electing a single member to the County Board.
Much like the US Congress, the County Board approves all legislation for Madison County, passes ordinances, and levies taxes designed to keep your local government operating at its best. The Board's responsibilities also include ratifying the County Budget, approving and allocating Federal grants, as well as maintenance and acquisition of the County's property.
The Board is further broken down into various committees, each one with a different purpose and each one serving the community to their utmost. These committees regularly handle any issues which arise in the county which fall under their jurisdiction and are charged with submitting ideas to the Board to solve them.
The Board Chairman acts in a similar vein to the Speaker of the House and appoints other Board members as well as the Chairman Pro Tempore, who is de facto in charge of board meetings when the chairman can't attend. The Board ratifies any appointments made by the Chairman.
